Scripted/removable trees on terrain

I'm wondering if it's possible to fairly easily make trees on a terrain object that have a script (E.G, axe trigger enters tree collider, destroy tree and instantiate fallen log prefab), and can be dynamically removed or created. If not with a vanilla terrain object, would it be possible to mass-place tree prefabs around the map (about 1000x1000 units) with something and not get too much of a performance failure?
